How to move when you have to leave the old place before the new place is ready

I'm selling my house and closing is on Sep 25th. The apartment I'm moving to is not gonna be ready until Oct 1st. I can crash at a friend's house for a week, no problem. But what do I do with my stuff?

I could put them in storage, but that means hiring movers twice. Once to move from old place => storage, and then a week later from storage => new place. That could get very expensive.

What do people do in such a scenario?
