Husband and I want to relocate our primary residence (3,000 sqft) from the city to a smaller town in the next couple years. We’ve checked out the area, and found the part of town we’d like to end up in. The properties have forested acreage and lodge style homes (our dream). The problem is, the homes are huge! They start at around 5,800 sqft and go up from there. Does it seem obnoxious for two people (no kids) to have such a big house? What if all that extra space feels lonely? Or sad (a reminder we decided not to have kids, and who knows if we’ll regret that decision)? I’m also worried our friends, when they come to visit, will think we’re pretentious a-holes for buying a house that big. (We’re really low key about our financial situation). And then there are considerations like utilities and cleaning. I don’t like having random people in my home, so a housekeeper is out of the question, and I don’t like the idea of using a bunch of energy resources we don’t need. Any opinions are welcome.
