Anyone bought a house that ended up being too big?

Husband and I want to relocate our primary residence (3,000 sqft) from the city to a smaller town in the next couple years. We’ve checked out the area, and found the part of town we’d like to end up in. The properties have forested acreage and lodge style homes (our dream). The problem is, the homes are huge! They start at around 5,800 sqft and go up from there. Does it seem obnoxious for two people (no kids) to have such a big house? What if all that extra space feels lonely? Or sad (a reminder we decided not to have kids, and who knows if we’ll regret that decision)? I’m also worried our friends, when they come to visit, will think we’re pretentious a-holes for buying a house that big. (We’re really low key about our financial situation). And then there are considerations like utilities and cleaning. I don’t like having random people in my home, so a housekeeper is out of the question, and I don’t like the idea of using a bunch of energy resources we don’t need. Any opinions are wel...

A quick tip for 1st time buyers. Don't do 3% or 5% down. Wait until you can put at least 25% down.

I've been there myself. You're tired of living in a rental, with your rent going up every time you renew your lease. And WANTING to finally get a place of your own. You begin to look for mortgages, and find that you can get a house with as little as 3% down, in some cases, 5%. So, you start to "Sort of" look at houses online, thinking "It's a $300,000 starter home, all we need is $15,000 and to qualify for a mortgage. So you put a away a bit more each month until you have $15,000 saved up. Well, now you have a 30 year, $285,000 mortgage. Your monthly payment is $2,225. With principal and interest, with a 7% rate, you'll pay $683,000 over the course of the 30 year loan. But if you wait until you can put down 25%, $75,000, you'll have a $225,000 mortgage, with a monthly payment of $1760, and a total payout of Payment and Interest of $540,000. Savings in interest: $143,000. Even if you don't keep the house for the full 30 year term, you'll b...

Buying a house FSBO

I'm buying a house that's for sale by owner, who's a realtor. She has mentioned several times that she knows of a certain lender's loan officer that is great to work with and has given me the lender's loan officer contact information. Maybe I'm thinking too much into it, but I feel like there may be some ulterior motive here? What are the cons of maybe using the lender/loan officer that is recommended by this seller/realtor? submitted by /u/Unable-Philosopher78 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/RealEstate/comments/y8q8of/buying_a_house_fsbo/

Allowing Pets in your Rental Property

Got a call from my property agent to say the tenants had brought in a rabbit and have asked what I wanna do about it, i.e. say its not allowed or just put in a Pet Clause. I dont really know much about rabbits, done a quick google search where a bunch of people say they can damage a bunch of stuff and another bunch saying rabbits are fine. My questions are as follows - Does anyone have experience with this - Why would people not allow tenants to have pets if you could have a pet clause to protect you? I assume the answer is because even though the tenants will be forced to pay for any damage, it is still a hassle to organise the repairs to be done? This may be an issue if damage is found as the tenants move out and then I'm unable to house new tenants until the repairs are finished Anyway please let me know if I'm overlooking anything. Thank you. submitted by /u/aasimpson04 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/RealEstate/comments/y8q80n/allowing_pet...

First time home buyer in California looking for advice

I just had a talk with my first lender earlier and I got quoted with a rate of around 6% for a 700k house. I started looking these past few months since that was the time where I sorted out finances but my credit score still isn't that great though I'm working on it (650s). My yearly salary (30/single) is around 200k, and household income is around 280k looking to do around 50k as down payment. Any advice or resources that I should read/check would be great! submitted by /u/Big-Fold-645 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/RealEstate/comments/y813vg/first_time_home_buyer_in_california_looking_for/

is it worth buying a house

With prices constantly going up, and houses are well over $100,00.00 how can a single person afford to buy a house? I keep looking and it's to the point where I've basically given up. Is it even possible for a single person to be able to buy a house with only making 14.00 an hour? submitted by /u/No-Acanthisitta-1 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/RealEstate/comments/y80qll/is_it_worth_buying_a_house/
