fyi, this is not a landlord vs renter question or vice versa. nor is it a renting vs owning rant.
I’ve been a renter in the past (for 13 years). i own a house now for a little longer than that. actually, am “renting” from the mortgage company until it’s paid off. i’ve been on both sides. both have their pros and cons.
that said, i see this statement come up time and again and it always puzzles me. i think i understand it means they don’t wanna pay over and above what is acceptable. but correct me if i’m wrong.
but i’m also confused if i interpret it in a literal sense. i mean, if the landlord still has a mortgage then, as a renter, you’re somewhat indirectly paying part of that mortgage. if they don’t have a mortgage then you’re paying for something in their life.
aren’t we all paying someone else’s “mortgage”? i’m helping a (rather wealthy) mortgage company make money by paying them interest (rent) every month.
i remember when i rented. this was an old historic house that had been converted into 5 apartments varying in size. anyway, the original landlords also lived there and were great. we actually became friends. tbh, my oldest and dearest friends to this day were tenants in that house.
but the original landlords sold and new people took over. the new people were soso and it became a situation (with my other housemates) where we would say, “oh look, they’re renovating their kitchen and we’re paying for it” etc etc.
and that’s kind of my point. if we’re not paying their mortgage we’re paying for something else. so you get into the mindset that you need to stop renting and own your own house.
i rented a room out a few years back and charged what the market was allowing. i looked at listings in the area and based my price on that. i had never rented out before and i even asked the renter if he thought the price was fair and he said it was. but it just so happened that the rent was almost what my mortgage was (just the principal and interest part - not property taxes and insurance).
