We are under contract to buy a house in Asheville NC with two drain fields, one from 1976 before there were permits and one that seems not to have been permitted. There isn’t much room to the side of the yard and it is possible not enough for a third.
At the inspection they found one full and not draining, switched to the old field and it drained. So it works for now. But how long?
The elderly couple who lived there since it was built don’t seem to know what actually happened, they live in their dream world.
We have applied for a permit for an additional field and are getting a second opinion but the first company said something can be done if needed, an additional drain field, pumping or something that allows for a shorter field or a $35k on site treatment center.
Is it the case that one can always work something out or do neighborhood houses become unlivable?
Is $35k a reasonable price expectation for worst case scenario?
Even with the work this house needs it is still the best fit for us. We are Moving from a 149 year old house, have had septic systems in the past and know what we are doing except with new septic lines.
I just don’t want to close and move there, have it back up with no plans, and have to move somewhere else waiting months for the county to approve something.
Any reassurance out there?
