As the title says, I’m curious about what this community thinks about sending the below letter to address cigarette odour invading my home. For six years my duplex neighbour was great, courteous wave or greeting when running into each other, she smoked outside, occasionally some karaoke a little loud and late which is all good. This past year she moved in some pos, he’s standoffish, they both now smoke inside a lot, I’ve had smokers visit me and tell me how bad my place smells, monthly 3 am fights lasting over an hour that go from inside to outside.
“Dear neighbour name,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to reach out regarding concerns that have arisen over the past year, as I believe addressing them now will help preserve both our living environment and the value of our shared duplex.
As you know, we’ve shared this building harmoniously for over 6 years, and I’ve always appreciated your consideration in smoking outside during that time. However, since the smoking has moved indoors this past year, the odor has become pervasive in my unit, permeating furniture, walls, and fabrics. This is not only unpleasant but also poses a risk to the resale value of both our properties, as persistent smoke damage is a significant deterrent to potential buyers (as confirmed by real estate professionals).
I kindly request that you and your partner resume smoking outdoors, as you did previously, to prevent further odor transfer through our shared wall. If indoor smoking must occur, I strongly suggest:
1. Using air purifiers with HEPA filters in your unit to reduce odor migration.
2. Sealing gaps or vents along the shared wall to minimize smoke infiltration.
3. Confining smoking to a room with better ventilation or farther from shared spaces.
Additionally, I must bring to your attention recurring loud disturbances (e.g., shouting matches) after 3 AM, which disrupt quiet enjoyment of my home. I ask that we both make a renewed effort to keep noise levels respectful after 12 a.m., per municipal noise bylaws.
I trust you’ll treat this request with the seriousness it warrants, as unresolved smoke damage and noise issues could negatively impact both our investments. Please confirm by Friday, February 7 whether you’re willing to take these steps. I’m open to discussing solutions further, but if we cannot resolve this amicably, I may need to involve third parties to protect my interests.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely”
